Integrating Soil Biodiversity into Ecosystem Services

Charles University

Charles University is the largest tertiary education institution in Czechia, consisting of 17 faculties and four institutes.

  • CU employs more than 5 thousand research and education staff and provides training for over 50 thousand students (including over 11 thousand students from abroad).
  • CU is part of the 4EU+ Alliance, one of the first 17 “European Universities” alliances supported by the European Commission to enhance the quality and attractiveness of European higher education.
  • According to the QS World University Rankings in 2023, CU is the 288th best ranking university in the world and the 9th best in Central and Eastern Europe.
  • Research activities of the Faculty of Science include fundamental and applied research in biology, chemistry, geology, geography and environmental studies.
  • The Faculty employs over 1,000 research and education staff members and provides training for more than 5200 students; almost 1500 are doctoral students.

Role within SOB4ES

The CU team will contribute to the project through:

(a) Determination and evaluation of oribatid mites (Oribatida) throughout all investigated habitats
(b) Analysis and proposal of policy-relevant recommendations in relation to existing and prepared European legislation
(c) Support to documentation, communication and educational activities related to the importance of soil fauna importance (incl. video sequences, photos, etc.)
